Another Lego Cake!

A few weeks ago, my friend asked if I would make a cake for her Son's birthday. She sent me a picture of what she had been thinking of- and (not because of the cake) I instantly thought of the website I often read called Cake Wrecks where the hilarious bloggers point out the spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and the losses of communication that "professional" bakers encounter. Luckily, I get to enjoy the hilarity of it all... often. However, seeing this photo made me think of all the postings where the bloggers say "this is the photo the baker received... and this is what they produced" and the baker's cake has nothing to do with the first photo.

Hopefully this one wont make it to that website! I had fun building the cake, as well as seeing the whole thing come together with the Lego pieces and the lettering. I haven't made many tiered cakes, but I certainly had fun making this one!

 Pre-stacking...

Stacked!

 Letters done.

 Lego head, tick!

Result... one pretty cool cake for the birthday boy!

Shooting Stars

Sometimes when I'm working on projects I get side tracked and try out little mini projects on the side. This time was no different. I wanted to use some of the left over cake I had on hand, and some of the fondant and was trying to think of what I could do with them... I knew I was heading over to see my Mum tonight so I thought I should bring something along, and decided therefore to make a tiny cake with what I had there in front of me. Who knows what inspired me to use a star-shaped cookie cutter to shape the little cake, but it's just as well I chose a star and not any of the other Christmas-themed cutters I had on hand. Imagine having a mitten shaped cake in the Summer?

The cake turned out to be the perfect little sweet to eat, and I was thinking what other little shapes I could use...

Aloha!

I see a theme emerging recently... After I made De Lime in De Coconut truffles, I moved straight into another use for coconuts. This time round I was asked to make cupcakes with a Hawaiian theme for a going away party. My friend, who asked me to make the cupcakes, sent me a few photos of Hawaiian cupcakes that she'd found online, which all gave me ample inspiration. I wanted to make everything brightly coloured and to really evoke the beachy feeling one gets when your thinking of Hawaii. The cupcakes themselves were decorated like a little beach with blue icing and graham cracker "sand", and on top of each cupcake I placed a piece of fondant that I moulded into various Hawaiian-themed shapes like surf boards, flip flops and hibiscus flowers. Underneath all this bright fondant was good sized portion of coconut cake! I couldn't actually make Hawaiian themed cupcakes and not have a tropical-flavour for the cake. Thanks to Anna Olson, I found a lovely recipe for coconut cake and I'm definitely going to make that one again!

Once everything came together and I saw all the cupcakes together, I felt really proud. Hopefully someday I'll get to a do a Hawaiian themed birthday party for one of my distant future children.

Put de Lime in de Coconut...

Just another experiment with the truffle cakes. I was going to another pool party with friends, so I brought along my inside-out-peanut-butter balls, and felt I wanted to try another flavour too. Mostly because as I took out the peanut-butter chocolate I caught a whiff of the key lime-flavoured chocolate and wanted to work with them somehow. So I went with vanilla cake, dipped them in the key lime-flavoured chocolate then before the chocolate set I sprinkled the truffle with shredded coconut. I received great reviews, and was assured they were very yummy! I would love to try these with coconut cake!

Another Big Cake

Not an order, not a commission, not a favour, but a present (with slightly ulterior motives) for two of my friends. Recently Patrick and I hosted some of our friends at our house and it just so happened that it was one of their birthday's. The week before that it had been his fiancĂ©e's birthday also so I couldn't avoid the opportunity to bake a cake for them!  Here's the ulterior motive part: I needed to test a recipe for an order at the end of the month, so this was also the perfect opportunity. Gladly my friends thought the cake was delicious as did I, and I felt it was firm enough too so I could stack the cake.

I felt a bit lazy and couldn't be bothered to make vanilla icing, so I used melted white chocolate and put it in one of my bottles to "write" the words.

Sprinkles!!!

By the way- I need to point out that this is my 100th blog posting!!!!!!!!!

Mid-Holiday Treats

I was lucky enough to have three weeks off this Summer, and not only from work but from my little baking projects too. Although I enjoy decorating little cakes I do also like a little hiatus as well. During my three weeks off I planned a trip to see my Uncle in the Bruce Peninsula, Ontario and as a hostess gift I brought along some truffle cakes. I know that my Uncle and Aunt are fond ice cream so I felt inspired to bring some ice cream like flavours to the truffle cakes. I mixed three flavours: chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. I quite liked the look of all the truffles in a group in their box, I rather felt inspired to try other ice cream flavours in the future....
